BioLite CampStove: The Multi-Tasking Camp Fire Tool You Need to Own

Going on a nature excursion is one of life’s pleasures. We love the back-to-basics feeling that comes with being in the great outdoors, enjoying the fresh air, and sitting around a campfire.  But let’s face facts: We also love technology and things that help elevate these experiences to the next level. One perfect way to make that happen is with the BioLite CampStove.

What is it?

The BioLite CampStove is a fire source as well as an electricity generator that powers small devices like your phone, lights, and MP3 player.  It converts heat from the fire into usable electricity using its patent-pending thermoelectric technology.

Pros

You’ll never have to use conventional, polluting fuel or carry heavy bottles around, as the BioLite eliminates the need for these sources and instead uses twigs and wood pieces you collect along the way to start and feed the fire. A built-in fan that circulates oxygen through the chamber helps ignite the fire quickly and efficiently. You can roast marshmallows on the open flames, boil a liter of water in under five minutes, or cook bacon, as we did, on the portable BioStove grill that you can purchase as a great accompaniment to the stove. Importantly, the campfire experience isn’t lost as you can still watch the fire dance, glimmer and flicker on the BioStove just like your traditional camp flames.

Of course, it’s the BioStove’s device charging functionality that adds the cool factor to this product. Once you start the fire, you just have to wait for a green indicator light to go on and you’re ready to charge everything from your iPhone to your flashlights and more. This feature advances the BioStove from just being a camping accessory to also serving as a great addition to your natural disaster preparedness kit.

Cons

While you don’t need regular fuel, you do need to have enough wood or twigs around to replenish the fire and keep it going. That means having a sufficient amount on hand is essential, and if you’re in a wet weather area it may be tough to find enough dry kindling to get things going.  Another downside we noticed was that it can be difficult to clean the BioStove, as it gets dirty rather easily.

Conclusion

When it comes to camping or backpacking, gear and tools that multi-task are extremely valuable.  The BioLite CampStove, with its two-in-one, capabilities is exactly that. Check out the video of how it works below.
